Moving house is stressful enough without getting hit by a quote that’s higher than expected. If you’re planning a move in or around Dartford, Bromley or Greenwich, this guide breaks down what actually drives the cost of a removal in each area — and what you can do to keep things running smoothly.

Why Two Similar Moves Can Cost Very Different Amounts

Before we look at each area specifically, it’s worth understanding something most people don’t realise: distance is rarely the biggest factor in your removal cost. What actually drives price is time — and time is driven by access.

A three-bedroom semi in a quiet Dartford cul-de-sac with a driveway can be loaded in a fraction of the time it takes to move a similar-sized flat in Greenwich where parking is restricted, there are four flights of stairs, and the nearest loading bay is 40 metres from the front door.

The main factors we assess on every job are:

With that context in mind, here’s what to expect in each of the three areas we cover regularly.

Moving in Dartford

Dartford is one of the more straightforward areas we work in, which is one reason it’s become so popular with families relocating from inner London. Most of the established residential streets — across areas like Wilmington, Stone, Sutton-at-Hone and Swanscombe — offer decent road width and reasonable parking, which keeps loading times manageable.

That said, not all of Dartford is the same. Newer developments around Ebbsfleet and Springhead can throw up surprises: shared parking areas, restricted-width access roads, or properties where the front door is a long carry from where a removal vehicle can safely stop.

If you’re moving from a flat within Dartford itself — particularly in or near the town centre — factor in the same access considerations you’d expect anywhere urban.

One practical note: if you’re moving into Dartford from London, the Dartford Crossing adds time to the journey rather than cost (we account for it in our planning), but early morning starts can save you a significant amount of sitting in traffic on the A2 or M25.

Moving in Bromley

Bromley is more varied than it first appears. The borough covers everything from large Victorian and Edwardian houses in areas like Bickley and Sundridge Park, to modern flat conversions closer to Bromley town centre and the high street.

For moves from houses with driveways or quiet residential streets — think Petts Wood, Chislehurst, or Orpington — the process tends to be efficient. Wider roads and less footfall mean the crew can work quickly.

Closer to the town centre, or in flats above commercial premises, things get trickier. Double yellow lines mean you may need to apply for a parking suspension in advance (we can advise on this), and some properties have narrow access that rules out larger vehicles.

Bromley is also a popular destination for people moving out of more central parts of South East London — Lewisham, Catford, Forest Hill — and those moves can vary quite a bit depending on what you’re leaving behind as much as where you’re going.

Moving in Greenwich

Of the three areas, Greenwich tends to involve the most logistical complexity. It’s a borough we know well, but it requires careful planning.

The mix of property types here is enormous: converted Victorian terraces, new-build riverside apartments, ex-council flats, Georgian townhouses near the park. Each presents a different set of access considerations.

Parking suspensions are often a necessity rather than a precaution — particularly on streets around Greenwich town centre, Blackheath, and anywhere near the riverside developments at Woolwich or Charlton. These need to be organised through the council in advance, and leaving it too late can cause real problems on moving day.

Flats with lifts sound ideal but often aren’t — a small lift in a busy building means queuing, which means time. We’ve done moves in Greenwich where a sixth-floor flat with a lift took longer than a fourth-floor walkup simply because of lift wait times and size.

If you’re moving into or out of Greenwich, the earlier you can get us involved in planning, the better.
