When you are preparing to move house, it is natural to assume that everything you own can be packed into boxes and placed inside the removal vehicle. However, certain belongings cannot be transported as part of a standard household removal.

Some items create a risk of fire, explosion, leakage or contamination. Others are controlled by law, require specialist transportation or fall outside a removal company’s insurance and safety procedures.

ASP Removals also has its own clear restricted-items policy. For safety reasons, we do not transport gas cylinders, paint, alcoholic drinks, e-bikes, fuel, fuel-powered machinery or other hazardous substances within our removal vehicles or storage facilities.

Identifying restricted items before moving day prevents delays and gives you enough time to arrange safe disposal, return products to their supplier or organise a suitable alternative form of transportation.

A removal vehicle contains furniture, clothing, cardboard boxes, soft furnishings, electrical equipment and many other potentially combustible belongings. A leaking container, damaged battery or flammable substance could therefore endanger the complete load.

ASP Removals does not transport petrol, diesel, paraffin, bioethanol, lighter fluid, camping fuel or other flammable fuels.

Petrol-Powered Equipment

ASP Removals does not transport petrol-powered tools, garden equipment or machinery, even where the customer believes the fuel tank has been emptied.

Fuel, vapour or oily residue may remain within the engine, tank, fuel line or carburettor.

Gas Cylinders and Pressurised Containers

ASP Removals does not transport gas bottles, cylinders or pressurised gas containers.

This restriction applies even where a cylinder is believed to be empty. Residual gas may remain inside, and a damaged valve or container can create a serious safety risk.

What Should You Do with a Gas Cylinder?

Where possible, contact the company that supplied the cylinder. Many refillable cylinders remain the property of the supplier and can be returned through an authorised retailer or collection point.

Do not puncture, dismantle, burn or place a cylinder in household rubbish.

Can ASP Removals Move a Gas Barbecue?

The barbecue itself may be considered separately if it is completely cold, clean and free from grease, ash, charcoal and loose components.

However, ASP Removals will not transport the connected or disconnected gas bottle. The cylinder must be removed from the premises through a suitable alternative arrangement.

Paint, Varnish and Decorating Products

ASP Removals does not transport paint, including sealed, unopened or partly used tins.

Paint containers can split, leak, open or become damaged during handling. Even a small leak can contaminate furniture, clothing, carpets, books and other belongings within the vehicle.

Lithium-ion batteries can become dangerous if they are damaged, crushed, punctured, overheated or affected by an internal fault.

Most ordinary household electronics and appliances can be moved when they are in safe condition, disconnected and packed correctly.

However, any device with a damaged, swollen or overheating battery must be declared and kept out of the removal load.

Fireworks, Flares and Explosive Materials

Fireworks, distress flares, detonators, explosive cartridges and similar items must never be placed inside an ordinary removal vehicle.

This applies even when the product is unopened, unused or still inside its original packaging.

Garages, sheds, lofts and inherited properties sometimes contain old bottles or containers with missing labels.

Pets, Perishable Food and Other Unsuitable Items

Pets and Live Animals

Dogs, cats, birds, fish, reptiles and other live animals cannot travel inside the furniture compartment of a removal vehicle.

A removal van is designed for household belongings and does not provide the supervision, temperature control, restraint or access to water that an animal needs.

Pets should travel with their owner or through an appropriate animal-transport service.

Where possible, arrange for pets to stay with a friend, relative or sitter while the removal team is loading. This also reduces the risk of animals escaping through an open door or gate.

Perishable and Frozen Food

Frozen, chilled, open or highly perishable food should not be included in the main removal load.

Removal vehicles are not refrigerated, and delays can cause food to defrost, spoil or leak onto other belongings.

Use as much refrigerated and frozen food as possible before moving day. Any remaining essentials should be transported separately in suitable cool boxes.

Open Food and Unsealed Containers

Open packets, unsealed jars and liquids can spill or attract pests. Do not pack them among furniture, clothing or other household goods.

Preparing Appliances Before Moving Day

These should be disconnected, drained and allowed to dry before the removal team arrives.

Empty the hoses and secure them to prevent residual water from leaking onto furniture or boxes.

Check these areas several weeks before moving day. Look behind shelving, inside cabinets and beneath workbenches.

Separate Restricted Items Immediately

Create a clearly marked area for anything that must not be loaded.

Make sure every member of the household understands that these items are staying behind or travelling separately.

Do Not Hide Items Inside Boxes

Do not pack paint, alcohol, fuel, gas canisters or batteries inside boxes labelled with vague descriptions such as “garage”, “shed” or “miscellaneous”.
